GOMA and U-zhaan will be Playing indigenous instruments at nightclub VENT OmotesandoMusic
Having set dance floors all across Japan ablaze with primordial, aboriginal instruments like the didgeridoo and tabla, GOMA meets U-zhaan make their way to nightclub VENT Omotesando!
The foremost didgeridoo artist in Japan, GOMA, joins forces with master tabla manipu-lator U-zhaan and will be playing at VENT on May 25th! This duo will be blowing and striking ancient, indigenous instruments like the traditional aboriginal didgeridoo and the classical Indian tabla, respectively, to create a legendary grooves that could only be conjured by human energy. This will be a brand new experience!
GOMA is master didgeridoo player, the oldest wind instrument known to man. In 1998 he traveled to Australia alone and ventured to aboriginal holy land, Arnhem Land, where he came in second at the Barunga Didgeridoo Competition. He was the first non-aboriginal player to have received such high standings. However, in 2009 was in-volved in a traffic accident and was afterwards diagnosed with executive dysfunction, which forced him to go on hiatus. Right after the accident, he took up creating Pointil-list pictures, which is a technique that involves applying many small dots to create an image. His works received much acclaim and were exhibited in galleries all over the country. It was thought that he would never full recover, but in 2011 he overcame his disability and played a legendary set at the Fuji Rock Festival, making a miraculous recovery and kick starting his return to making and playing music! In 2012 GOMA was the main character in the movie “Flashback Memories 3D” that won the audience award at the Tokyo International Film Festival that year. Currently, he is giving lec-tures and is active with other work on top of playing the didgeridoo and creating art-work.
U-zhaan studied the classical Indian percussion instrument under table virtuosos Zakir Hussein and Anindo Chatterjee. In 2000 he joined Asa-Chang & Junray and released 4 albums. After a decade with the same unit, he left and released U-zhaan x rei hara-kami. In 2014 he dropped the solo effort “Tabla Rock Mountain” featuring illustrious guest collaborators Ryuichi Sakamoto, Cornelius, and Hanaregumi. And then in 2017 he released “2 Tone” as the duo Shuta Hasunuma & U-zhaan. 2018 saw U-zhaan re-lease a new version of Ryuichi Sakamoto's famous track “Energy Flow”, titled “Energy Flow - rework under the name U-zhaan and Ryuichi Sakamoto, and this year a rap version of the same track featuring Tamaki ROY and Chinza DOPENESS, called “Energy Furo” (a play on flow with the Japanese word for bath, furo) was released to much intrigue.
This sort of event is a first for us at VENT - music created by humans and that cannot be generated by machines. We want our electronic music-loving audience to experi-ence this, first hand. So don't miss this chance!
