A Hydrangea Festival is being held at Yokohama Hakkeijima Sea Paradise, and its views are even great at night!

Activity

The 19th Hakkeijima Hydrangea Festival is open from Saturday, June 8th to Sunday, June 30th at Yokohama Hakkeijima Sea Paradise.

  • This is a great place to see hydrangeas in all their unique and varied splendor!

Hakkeijima is a picturesque island located in the sea just off of Kanazawa-Hakkei. It is home to 20,000 hydrangeas, making it the largest hydrangea garden in Kanagawa Prefecture. The island has a bounty of locations from which to gaze upon the spectacle.

Hydrangeas undulate between states of quiet grace and vibrant color, and are even more beautiful in this balanced natural environment of sea and sky. At night, the white Annabelles can be seen in full bloom at the “Hydrangea Falls” in a fantastic illuminated display.

  • A fantastic night viewing spot! The Illuminated Hydrangea Garden Path

For the limited duration of the Hydrangea Festival, the Hydrangea Garden Path will be beautifully illuminated with hanging lanterns at night.

The gentle light from the lanterns at the Hydrangea Falls plays on the colors of the flowers to create a totally different atmosphere from that of the day.

  • Hakkeijima even has some of its own unique hydrangeas that can be seen nowhere else!

Four new types of hydrangeas were made through selective breeding at the park and were named by the public: Hakkei Blue, Hakkei Pink, Sea Paradise Blue, and Blue Étoiles. They are exclusive to Hakkeijima. Hakkei Blue can be seen at the bus stop in the plaza on the hill, and Hakkei Pink, Sea Paradise Blue, and Blue Étoiles can be seen at the stamp rally goal point.

  • Now featuring Hydrangea Aquariums that combine the beauty of hydrangeas with wildlife!

In addition to the hydrangeas coloring the island, there is also a special aquarium exhibit on the first floor of the Aqua Museum that features hydrangeas and sea slugs together in a single display called “Shellrium: The Jewels of the Sea”. This exhibit was opened in July of last year and boasts of the largest variety of sea slugs and shellfish in Japan. Please enjoy the exquisite combination of the light-colored hydrangeas and the beautiful hues of the sea slugs.
