A unique illumination art exhibition at Hotel Gajoen Tokyo, Meguro

Hotel Gajoen Tokyo, a Museum Hotel of Japan Beauty, is pleased to announce the upcoming “WANO AKARI x HYAKUDAN KAIDAN Illumination Exhibition 2019”, to be held from Saturday, 6 July to Sunday, 1 September 2019.

  • About “WANO AKARI x HYAKUDAN KAIDAN Illumination Exhibition 2019”

Started in 2015, this annual illumination exhibition is recognized as one of the not-to- miss events in summer in Tokyo, and the past four exhibitions have gathered more than 310,000 visitors in total. This year, the visitors can enjoy a diverse range of illuminated arts and crafts by more than 40 individuals and organizations from all over Japan lavishly decorating the historical setting of Hyakudan Kaidan - The Hundred Stairs, a Tangible Cultural Asset of Tokyo.

The exhibition will showcase the aesthetics of Japanese colour and lights, vividly interpreted by contemporary artists and artisans. Highlights of the exhibition include ever-popular, impressive Nebuta lantern floats from Aomori, a fantastical bamboo installation by an illumination artist NITTAKE from Miyazaki. Collaborative works with the famous Nagasaki Lantern Festival will colourfully decorate the Gyosho Room.
Popular sand artist duo “emullenuett” produced image projections, especially for this exhibition.

One of the remarkable attempts of this exhibition is the collaboration of artisans of Tokyo’s Traditional Crafts with contemporary designers. Their inspiring collaborative works will also be exhibited in the exhibition.
For those interested in taking pictures at this rare occasion, special tickets for exclusive-entrance hours are available for sale. All visitors will also have a chance to win prizes by joining the Instagram campaign, to be held during the exhibition.

  • There is a plan that you can wear a yukata

During the summer, the guests can enjoy “Yukata Plan” at Hotel Gajoen Tokyo. The plan includes the dressing of yukata (casual kimono for summer), lunch or dinner at a restaurant and the entrance to Hyakudan Kaidan (including WANO AKARI Illumination Exhibition during the exhibition period).
The guest may choose a yukata from a wide variety of colours and designs. This year, yukatas for children are added in the selection, in addition to adult men’s and women’s.
