Kosenji Temple

光泉寺

Kosenji Temple, one of Japan's three major Healing Buddha hot springs, is said to have been rebuilt in 1200 by Yunomoto, the lord of Kusatu as a Bettoji (a temple attached to a shrine) of Shirane Myojin Shrine. This temple is famous for the Shakanyorai Buddha statue which was thought to have been made by Koukei, a priest who help build the Todaiji Temple in the Genroku period. This was proven to be true by an investigation held in 2005. There are many places to visit such as the Shaka-do Hall and the Yakushi-do Hall built by Gyoki.

Good view of Kusatsu but fairly average temple

I guess after living in Japan for a few years and visiting many temples, they all start to blur together. If you want to get some stair climbing in and get a good view of Yubatake, take the time to... more

    Short visit to Kosenji Temple

A small buddhist temple. Nothing much special. Just that it was up a short flight of stairs from the Kusatsu Onsen Yubatake (hot spring field) and since already there, no harm walking up the stairs... more
